You will often hear marketers tout the massive number of Facebook users as an incentive to market on Facebook. Yet, if you are not marketing correctly, no one will ever know you exist. It’s similar to reaching the top spot in Google with a website that doesn’t load. Though millions of people are out there ripe for the picking, you will never experience an increase in your business profits.

Simply starting a Facebook fan page will only get you to step one. Don’t expect users to flock to your page when they don’t even know you exist. takes some time and effort, but in the end the rewards are worth the price.

DO – Provide Valuable Content

The term “valuable” has varied meanings depending on the person. Valuable content is more than just a high-quality, well-written article. Value is content that fulfills a need or solves a problem. The only way to provide this type of content is to know your audience.

DO – Know Your Audience

To whom are you marketing? What age group? Income level? What are the industry problems? Have you talked to your customers/prospects? What information are they looking for?

If you cannot answer all of these questions, you need to do some research. Come up with a marketing persona and seek to understand the pain points of your audience. Once you know whom you are targeting, you can provide specific content that appeals to them—this is VALUE at its finest.

DO – Be Human

For some reason, marketers turn into robots on Facebook. They forget they are communicating with real humans who have real needs. Social media is social. It encompasses opinions, emotions, interaction and intellect. Be yourself and enjoy your time while remaining professional. The more relaxed you are, the more Facebook users will want to engage with you.

DON’T – Use Generic Images

Social media users want to connect with brands. Businesses can ease into interaction smoothly by displaying “real” images which make a business more personable. Stock images and logos are all fine but they should not take the place of personal images and meaningful interaction.

DON’T – Over-Advertise

I know you launched social media campaigns to grow your business and make more money, but excess advertising won’t get you there. Save the advertising for banner ads and fliers. Social media users do not want to be bombarded with posts about how much you like your products and services. has to do with attracting people to your brand so they arrive at their own decision to work with you, not the other way around. Advertising on your Facebook Page is effective only in small doses.

DON’T – Neglect Your Page

Once you start a Facebook Page, don’t leave it in the dust. Leaving your page with old posts and outdated content can damage your brand.
