Looking to capitalize on the marketing benefits of Facebook? Facebook ads provide a low-cost strategy to target thousands of leads for your business. Facebook advertisements have increased in popularity over the last few years as Google Adwords continues to close accounts and tighten its terms.
The Facebook ad image is more important than any other element because it is often the first thing that catches the eye and draws people to the advertisement. Have you seen some of the image ads out there? From crazy to boring and everything in between, it is a virtual smorgasbord of variety and most fall short of reaching their goals.
What should your Facebook ads images look like? Whatever screams, “Look over here!” will often do the trick.
Here are some tips to help you choose the best Facebook images for your advertisement.
Zany or Comical
While this strategy won’t work for every business, it certainly is worth a try. Images that make people smile, laugh or look in disbelief are very attractive. The image must draw the eye to the ad so the more outrageous the better. Once viewers look at the image, their curiosity will get the better of them and they will want to know more.
The ad below is from the popular communications software gotomeeting.com. The image is virtually void of meaning unless you are a Shrek fan. However, the color and crazy image draws the eye to the advertisement.
The image below is somewhat comical but more targeted towards the business than the above ad. It also shows the problems CPAs face when confronted with big tax returns and mounds of paperwork.
I also liked this one because it appeals to those who love adorable animals and it’s not something you see every day…
Whitespace
Since Facebook’s background is white, an image with a white background can pop off the screen more because it isn’t surrounded by as much clutter. For example, I pulled this ad off my Facebook account today and noticed it above all others because it stood out and did not have any boundaries or background behind the image.
Target Market
If you are targeting a certain demographic, which is true of most Facebook marketers, it’s important to use the subject in your image. For example, if you are advertising art classes, try an image of a person painting a portrait.
The ad below hails from a fitness facility and the image shows an active woman which closely aligns with the target demographic. I would have made this image a little more colorful with a different background perhaps, but overall, the idea is there.
In this image, the target market is people who are engaged to be married. Again, I think the image could use a little work, but the message is on point.
Bold Colors
Bold colors with simple backdrops can catch the eye immediately. I like this ad because in some way it simulates the Google colors which are bold and it also spreads a message with the word “logo”. This ad is from the popular site fiverr.com. Fiverr.com offers services for just about anything but it is doing the right thing by targeting a specific demographic with this advertisement and the image follows suit.
And yet another…
Celebrities and Hot People
While my conservative brain doesn’t condone using hot people as an advertising gimmick, the strategy can work for the right business. Entertainment websites or fitness companies may do well with these types of images. Celebrity images also work very well.
I used this technique with a client who sells wedding albums. The ads were not performing well so I replaced the image with a wedding photo from Kate Middleton and Prince William, the royal wedding that was in full swing at the time. The ad click-through rates skyrocketed after that one simple change. If celebrity news corresponds with what you sell, it’s worth a try to use a related image.
Change it Up
Even if an ad image performs well, it will grow stale over time and readers won’t click on it. Change up your images periodically or when you see a CTR decline.
Continue to test various ad images based on these tips. Once you reach about 0.1% CTR or above, you know you have a winner.
